KIPP, the Knowledge Is Power Program, was founded in Houston in 1994. Since that time, there are now 82 total KIPP schools open in 19 states and the District of Columbia. KIPP Houston's mission is to develop in underserved students the academic skills, intellectual habits, and qualities of character necessary to succeed at all levels of pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, college, and the competitive world beyond. In keeping with its trailblazing role, KIPP Houston opened the first elementary and high schools in the country which are now models for others.
